Peter Thornton, 56 from Halifax was an alcoholic and burglar in a previous life, now he spreads the gospel of Jesus Christ in Britain and Europe.
Thornton has been coming to Leeds for 26 years to spread the gospel. Before that, he was an alcoholic and a burglar who worked in hotels and restaurants around the north of England.
“God healed me of sclerosis of the liver. I do evangelism all over Great Britain and I’ve been out to Italy Malta Spain and many other countries,” says Thornton.
He was alcoholic from the age 14 to 27. He says his professional life, working in bars was to blame for his addiction so when he gave up the drink he gave up working around it too.
“Rum and black was my favourite drink. But now I can’t even stand the smell of alcohol,” says Thornton. “I was a serious alcoholic, sclerosis of the liver. I drank everything, Pernod, whiskey, all the wrong things. Beer, Guinness, then I used to break and enter. I became an addict. I was feeding my addiction with burglary.”
Thornton loves Leeds but wishes it was more religious.
