Today is the closing date for candidate nominations for the general election.

By Harry Douglas-Gratton

With December 12 fast approaching, it’s important to be informed about who and what is being voted for in the most significant election of a generation.

So who are the candidates putting themselves forward to represent the five city-based constituencies in Leeds?

Leeds Central

Hilary Benn – Labour Party
Peter Fortune – Conservative Party
Ed Carlisle – Green Party
Jack Holland – Liberal Democrats
Paul Thomas – Brexit Party
William Clouston – Social Democratic Party

Leeds West

Rachel Reeves – Labour Party
Dan Walker – Liberal Democrats
Daniel Whetstone – Social Democratic Party
Ian Cowling – Yorkshire Party
Mark Dormer – Conservative Party
Mike Davies – Alliance for Green Socialism
Phillip Mars – Brexit Party
Victoria Smith – Green Party

Leeds North West

Stewart Harper – Conservative Party
Alex Sobel – Labour and Co-operative Party
Kamran Hussain – Liberal Democrats
Martin Hemingway – Green Party
Graeme Alan Webber – Brexit Party

Leeds North East

Fabian Hamilton – Labour Party

Leeds East

Leeds North West is the most marginal of these constituencies. While it is currently held by the Labour party, from 2005 to 2017 it was a Lib Dem seat.

Leeds East, on the other hand, has been Labour for years but in 2016 voted to leave the European Union, making this a likely target for newcomers The Brexit Party.

For the election results as they arrive, tune into our BJTC broadcast on December 12.
